Hopes were flooded with disappointment as the government handed yet another raw deal to the Indian Army. Buckling under an acute shortage of officers and a host of them queuing up for a pre-mature retirement, the Sixth Pay Commission looked like an only deciding factor which would tip the scales in either side. But alas, that did not do anything to bring smiles on the faces of thousands of military personnel who were hoping for better salary after the pay-commission.

What is the future of Indian Army, one would ask? The charm the uniform, the stylish lifestyle and the unending list of facilities may have had their glitter in yesteryears but with corporate companies offering that and much more, the defense forces are no longer a tempting option for youngsters. Who would want to put their lives on risk for peanuts? That is what it boils down to ultimately. “doubling of allowances” and “special military service pay” may look enviable when they are flashed on television but how many people know that an allowance that was once Rs.50 has been doubled up to Rs.100! And what’s more? The counter-insurgency allowance has been conveniently overlooked and substituted by a paltry sum of Rs.6000 for an officer and Rs.1000 for a jawan. Can this amount make up for all the hard-ships and risks that a soldier has to put up with? With growing expenses and amenities, it is not easy for a military man to keep his family comfortable. A jawan candidly states- “I do not want to get posted anywhere close to my home-town because I do not want my parents to see what pathetic conditions my family lives in”. That pretty much sums up a soldiers concern. A colonel earns as much as a call-center fresher- why on earth wouldn’t he be tempted to dump the uniform and look for a corporate job when companies are dying to hire an experienced and talented officer like him. After all, money has always had its lure and there is no denying that money is what people work for.

In the end, it all culminates into vote politics. Most army-men do not stay in their home towns and some are posted in remote valleys and border-villages. As a result, they do not get to cast their votes as often as they would like. Has the government realized that the vote of an army-man is not substantial enough to be cared for?

Officers who had not put up their papers yet were waiting for the prospects to unfold after the pay-commission. With an excuse of a hike and a certainty of stagnation till the next-pay commission, they have now geared up with their retirement procedures. Keeping the current scenario in mind, if our country faces a security thereat- will there be anyone left to defend it?
Like the cliché goes: “you pay peanuts, you get monkeys!”

The govt. keep on crying that they have provided the best budget for the army and now the pay commission is there because of army, but what have they provided to army officers and jawans? Just a pinch of salt was added to their wounds. Then they say young generation is not willing to join armed forces. Who will like to join it when they are provided with attractive salary plus the perks in the cooperate sector who will like to risk his life for peanuts.

Thks to Suchi for lime lighting the truth of six pay commission for armed forces

Even for normal employees final benifits won’t be much more than 10-20%.

they have merged DA and DP with salary and that’s why previous salary ( without DA and DP) has been increased by 40%. But when you count the salary %age hike after adding DA and DP to previous salary then there is only 10-20% hike.
2 Stars
yes that’s true Nishant. till now, the DA and DP made up for more than double of the basic salary...these recommendations may look good on paper but in actuality, it amounts to barely nothing. The Indian Army is growing weaker by the day.

A financially well established person can think more positively about the nation’s progress and development, giving his best of efforts. I am not apprehensive about our Jawans’ sense of duty, but they certainly deserve better salary along with the facilities they are enjoying. Pay Commission seriously needs to pay heed to their plea.

I go in to most government offices and most often they are out on lunch. They come at 11, sit in the canteen till 12. Sit in their chair for 30mins and then go for lunch. They come back at around two and then start preparing to leave by 3. I know it sounds lunatic but from a Pension Office to State Secretariat; it is the same everywhere. So I was pretty baffled when they even got a hike!

But I forgot that the Army was a part of it. They should not be and they must be paid separately. It is a disgrace that they are even clubbed together. Thanks for reminding me this and I don’t expect anything to change.

It is a shame that the Indian government is not willing to pay the men they need the most. After all the vote bank of army men do not matter to them. Once an army personnel dies on action our politicians would rush to their houses to shed few drops of crocodile tears.

Mr. attitude, they fight hard to get those jobs, some guys dont work and you make take it something that is same all around.

If no govt employees work then can you tell me how in the name ogod you see all those developments going around you?

I know that few officials are corrupt, they dont do their job properly but that dsnt mean that no one does.

One must be an idiot to think that govt work is going on without anyone in offices working. It is a shame how people draw shitty conclusions just because they saw a bunch of people doing something wrong. It is just like saying that because Scarlet got murdered in India thus every Indian is a murderer and because a 13 yr old got pregnent in USA you start saying that every 13 yr old is USA is pregnent. Get a life DUDE.

And if you seriously are so pissed off then why don’t you do something about it? You must be happy with you have or else go out and make a difference, stop making non-sense comments over here.

People have spent their lives working for govt and all they get is mere 10k-20k, whereas ppl employeed in pvt sector with similar qualification and work load get double of that.

Sorry to others but , people like this really piss me off :(

”People have spent their lives working for govt and all they get is mere 10k-20k, whereas ppl employeed in pvt sector with similar qualification and work load get double of that.”

If they have same qualifications and same ability, who is stopping them from going to a private organization and earning much more? I don’t think anyone is holding them up only in govt. services.

Yes, you are right. we must try making a difference and hopefully we will make it. I do not wish to generalize, but the few who do work are ’few’. The problem with public sector is that pay and promotions are based on years of working instead of ability.

Anyway, you have every right to get pissed off and i won’t take that away from you...

before we lose the point and begin talking about govt jobs in general, one thing has to be kept in mind: though the army is paid by the govt, the job of an armyman is extremely different from that of any other govt employee. it is not fair to club them together . therefore, considerations for their salary should be made accordingly.

firstly there is a difference between nishant and nishanth, but anyways thats not even a point.

Some people join govt offices because private jobs are not available everywhere, but govt ones are. and not everyone is comfortable with leaving their homeland and family behind.

Secondly, govt. jobs are still considered as a prestigious thing, people respect those who can find themselves a way into the govt offices.

Most people I know (my frnds who wanted or who have govt jobs) went for govt sector because they believe that govt jobs are more prestigious.

And thing is that govt increased salaries of govt employees because people like you , who think that getting a pvt job is the coolest thing are plenty. and nowadays govt is falling short on youth, because everyone wants to make it big in pvt sector because they offer better payed jobs.

If you are so keen on making a difference then go and qualify administrative exams and make a difference. They are highly paid, well reputed and they do have powers to make a difference.

It will be lot better than cribbing on insta about how bad is that govt employees (essential part of a govt, because without them govt wld stop working) will be payed more from now on.

Suchi, i agree with you. but even in armed forces, high officials are highly (i must dare and say insanely) payed but it sad that those who lead from and die for our country are not given what they deserve. I am not saying that high officials dont do anything, but they get what they deserve. I feel that govt must increase pays of low cadres double-fold. Higher rank officials can wait, after all they get everything one can dream of.

it is a misconception that high ranked officers are earning big bucks. a bridadier takes home 30-35k. its true that they enjoy a lot of facilities and perks. they may be able to throw lavish parties and play golf ..but their pockets remain light :-)

30-35k with free education for kids in top schools, servents, cars, etc etc , virtually mean that out of 35k, at the end of the month, they can easily save 10-20k. which is pretty good.

It wasn’t even my point Shuchi, i meant that lower rank people really need the pay hike, wrt to high raked ones/

@ Nishant or is it Nishanth :P, you make a very valid point. As we go on and compare the salaries of Govt. vs. Pvt. sector, there are points that must be considered over and above the monetary considerations involved. As a matter of fact the basic research that the Pay Commission referred to (XLRI anybody?) said as much. The prestige associated with Govt. jobs, the retirement benefits, job security, more chances to balance life and so on must be given due consideration coz they are all a part of the overall picture.

But to return to Shuchi’s post, she’s quite right in mentioning that what we pay to defense personnel, particularly those closes to the line of fire, is a pittance considering the state of economy now. I sincerely hope that the government does a rethink on the whole issue of clubbing the diverse jobs of these people with other jobs. This is a fallaciousness committed, and sooner it is corrected the better.

@Nishant

Sorry to say ..you have many misconceptions..
first of all.. who says higher ranked defense officials are payed more...
A armed forces officer ranked colonel or brigadier in army or equivalent in other two services(Navy and Air Force) can merely save few thousand bucks a month.. govt pays them.. 25000 to 30000 bucks n expect a officer like life and stature from. Who says there are perks, some goddamn allowances for serving in -30’c temperature in Siachin or few bucks for a high altitude posting.
Need to clear the air.. After serving in for 10 years (thats the time it takes to be a colonel) managerial post in a corporate firm.. how much do you expect .. some thing around 80000 bucks or so (if you had a decent start.. if you had a 50000 start .. thats quiet common nowadays.. you would be getting around 150000 after 10 years..
SO this pay commission has done nothing for those who are laying their lives at borders..
lastly ... Suchi...a nice article...
keep posting...

@nishant...
and i forgot...
who said to you that defense officers’ kids are provided free education that too in top schools...
they pay equal to any other person in d world.. and obviously more than the other rank soldiers..
where r d servants... except the one damned sahaik.. which too is government planning to abolish..
cars... u call those sarkari gypsys .. cars.. for which they have to pay depending on the usage per kilometers.. if u use air conditioning.. u r entitles to pay more..
....hope now ur misconceptions r clear...

Gaurav, I really don’t know where you got those points of yours, but I have been living among the people who belong to defence and govt sector. So I know what I said and that is true enough.

Talking about cars, they only pay for personal usage and not for the use required by their jobs , thats same for any type of employee, be it govt or One in forces.

Secondly, Sainik schools don’t have much fees and they’v got best infrastructures in India. And if you are going to comeback and say that Sainik schools don’t have best infrastructure then I dont think that u know anything abt it.

As for servents, they’v got one two or more depending on their ranks.

And I forgot to mention that they also get well furnished houses and that too in best possible locations (atleast when they are posted in some city).

As for 25k - 30k, read my comment for Shuchi and then comment.

I am not saying that they dont deserve it but low ranked ones need it more than the higher officials.

and now I think that I’ve helped you to clear your misconceptions.
